Indian River Lagoon

The Indian River Lagoon is considered to be North America’s most biologically diverse estuary. It is home to more than 4,300 species of plants and animals. Many of these species are found nowhere else on Earth. The Lagoon stretches 156 miles from Ponce de Leon Inlet in Central Florida to Jupiter Inlet in South Florida. The width of the lagoon varies from one-half mile to five

miles, with an average depth of four feet. It is brackish, which means that it is a mix of fresh and salt water. The Indian River Lagoon is home to manatees, dolphins, pelicans, and sea turtles, as well as many other species of fish, birds, and mammals.

Sebastian Inlet State Park

Fishing

Sebastian Inlet is the premier saltwater fishing area on Florida's East Coast. Fishermen flock to the pier to try their luck in catching flounder, Spanish mackerel, grouper, snook, redfish, bluefish, snapper, sheepshead, permit, whiting, blues, and various species of shark. A fishing license may be required. More information is available at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Fishing in Florida.

Picnicking

There are picnic areas on both sides of Sebastian Inlet. The north side picnic area is next to the beach, while the south side of the park overlooks the waters of Sebastian Inlet, with four waterfront picnic pavilions.

Surfing

Over three miles of Atlantic beach provide a hot spot for surfing on the East Coast. Near the north jetty, Sebastian Inlet's first peak is one of Florida's most consistent surf breaks. Swells are amplified off the jetty and create several peaks along the sandbars. This area is where several of the greats got started, including Kelly Slater and the Lopez brothers. There are also several major surfing competitions in the Sebastian Inlet area, beginning early in the year.

Swimming

There are tons of swimming opportunities in the coves and lagoons all around the Treasure Coast. If you want to try something a little different, at the park you can choose between the Atlantic beaches, or the cove on the north side of Sebastian Inlet.

The Atlantic side is more active, and sometimes rough, while the cove is a protected area with a hard bottom and a gentle slope for a calmer and safer swimming experience.
